Rough waves crashed onto the Philippine coast as Typhoon Hinnamnor apprached the country's northern island of Luzon on Friday morning (September 2).

This video shows strong winds whipping up the waters off the seaside town of Calayan in Cagayan province.

State weather agency PAGASA said Hinnamnor, locally known as Henry, entered the Philippine weather monitoring area at 5:30 pm local time on Wednesday (August 31).

Meteorologists said it is unlikely to make landfall, but may enhance the effects of the southwest monsoon over Luzon.

The country's national disaster council on Friday said it is verifying reports that one person from the Cordillera Administrative Region - a cluster of six provinces in northern Philippines - was killed in a landslide due to the typhoon.

Hinnamnor was previously designated a "super typhoon'"but was downgraded to a typhoon while lingering east of Batanes, the country's northernmost province, on September 2.
