Amorous male Kangaroo follows a female and her cute Joey – but he’s out of luck
The large Western Grey Kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus) is abundant in Yanchep National Park in Western Australia. Western Grey Kangaroos are marsupials, and females carry their young (called Joeys) in their pouch. Males are much larger than females, weighing up to 70 kilograms (150 pounds) and measuring up to 2.2 metres (seven feet) from nose to tail. This large male Western Grey was closely following a female with her large Joey (baby kangaroo), hoping to mate with her. The female showed no interest in the male, and hopped along slowly, grazing as she went. Her Joey followed the adult Kangaroos closely, probably wondering what was going on. The Kangaroos in Yanchep National Park are used to people – these three ended up close to three park visitors, who snapped photos of them with their smartphones.
