Two people were seriously injured following a gas explosion in South Africa on Thursday evening September 22.

The blast ripped through a Superette supermarket on the corner of Victoria Road and Plein Road in Woodstock, Cape Town. Debris was strewn across the street.

Allan Swartz, a safety officer from Byers Security Solutions, told local media that he heard the blast before receiving radio notification of a fire in the building.

He added: 'On my arrival, I saw a lot of people standing around. Approaching the shop I saw a lot of flames and the blast coming from the shop behind it.'

Officials said that a number of explosions happened after the first blast. Two people suffered burns and were taken to hospital while firemen from the City of Cape Town's Fire and Rescue Service secured the area.
