Tropical Storm Sonca battered northeast Thailand and left swathes of the region underwater after making landfall on Saturday.

The storm inundated some 220 homes in the riverside village of Huai-sun in Khon Kaen province, with the water level rising up to one metre deep on October 16.

Aerial footage shows the widespread flooding covering roads and fields next to the village.

Residents evacuated to a relief centre as they waited for the water to recede.

Villager Sumettra Pim-maha, 52, said: 'The flood this year is higher than the previous years and it has already damaged the first floor of my house.

'Still, it hasn't kept me from working. I can still make jasmine garlands and sell them at the local market, in addition to selling fish.

'However, the water makes it tough for me to commute to and from the market.'

Authorities have been handing out relief packs for the flood-stricken locals, who are still reeling from the onslaught of monsoon rains compounded by Typhoon Noru's passage late September.

Local media reported that Sonca made landfall in Vietnam early morning on October 15.

Thailand has been experiencing severe flooding this year.

Meteorologists have blamed climate change for the sustained heavy rain, which has been hitting the Thai capital and provinces around the country causing heavy floods for several weeks.

Thailand's Center for Climate Change and Disaster claimed the coming months could see heavier, longer rainfalls, due to 'climate change'.

Local media reported that the country has this year seen 'an unusually sustained and persistent rainy season'.

The heavy rain has been compounded by the deluge from Typhoon Noru, which dumped water in the northeast region of the country, causing rivers flowing into the central region to swell.
