This is the heartwarming moment a stranded pensioner was rescued from his flooded home in Malaysia amid storms that have killed at least five people.

Rescue teams found the elderly man in his submerged property calling for help in the town of Pasir Puteh in Kelantan state on Wednesday December 21.

They held him aloft in his armchair with a blanket covering his waist. He was loaded into a rescue boat and transferred to hospital where he is recovering.

More than 70,000 residents have been evacuated to temporary relief centres across five states in Malaysia as monsoon rains continued to lash the country. Five deaths have been reported.

The heavy rain has also affected neighbouring Thailand where four-metre-high waves caused boats, including navy warship HTMS Sukothai, to sink. Rescue teams have been searching for missing sailors, with six confirmed dead, 23 missing and 76 of the 105 crew onboard rescued.
