Dozens of Macedonians gathered near the church St Spas in Skopje, where the grave of the revolutionary hero Goce Delchev is located, on Saturday 4 February.

Delchev is claimed by both North Macedonia and Bulgaria as a hero in the fight for the liberation of Macedonia from Turkey.

Commemoration of his memory -- Saturday was the 151st anniversary of his birth -- is sometimes a flashpoint for tension between the two.

Access to the grave was forbidden for ordinary citizens in the morning as the anniversary is considered a possible focus for trouble, so only registered delegations were allowed to lay flowers on the grave.

There was a heavy police presence in the centre of the North Macedonian capital following an incident a few days ago in which a man who identifies as Bulgarian was beaten.

He is an employee of one of the Bulgarian cultural clubs in North Macedonia that some people there see as provocative.
