This is the breathtaking moment an elephant family strolled along a mountain road.

The herd of six emerged from the forest and followed the concrete path in the Khao Yai National Park in Nakhon Ratchasima province, Thailand, on March 30.

Footage shows an adult jumbo leading its family as tourists and motorists backed away to give them space.

The leader of the herd was followed behind by a young elephant, a baby, and three more adults guarding the back.

Onlooker Teerapol Kapol said: ‘That was the Mae Duan herd. They are always together and is a close-knit family.'

The enormous creatures, however, appeared unbothered by the vehicles and people watching them as they passed by.

Thailand has an estimated 2,000 Asian elephants living in the wild - down from 100,000 a century ago - and around 3,000 in captivity owned privately. In the wild they are seen wandering freely among protected forests, occasionally appearing on the roads that run through them.
