Locals blasted homemade rockets into the sky to welcome the rainy season in Thailand.

Villagers in Nakhon Ratchasima province shot the PVC projectiles into the heavens during the annual Rocket Festival on May 4.

The tradition, which was suspended for two years due to the flu pandemic, is held to mark the beginning of the rice farming season. Villagers pray for a bountiful harvest before firing the rockets.

The festival usually begins at the start of May every year.

During the celebration, rockets are fired into the sky to pay homage to the rain god Phaya Thaen as they are believed to penetrate the clouds to welcome the rainy season.

The festival is held in an open space located in the middle of rice fields, far from residential areas, in order to prevent accidents.
