This creative resident amused locals with a bizarre homemade 'spaceship' for a rocket festival in Thailand.

Wichan Sriputta, 55, livened up the festivities by transforming his electric bike into a flying saucer for the 30th Bang Fai parade in the Erawan municipality of Loei province on June 4.

Hilarious footage shows the mushroom cap-shaped extra-terrestrial vehicle gliding across the highway. Emerging from a hole at the apex of the dome was Wichan donning an amusing stereotypical green-skinned alien mask.

Locals marvelled at the unusual, out-of-this-world spacecraft coasting along the road next to cars.

Wichan said the UFO was made from a steel frame covered with shading net and spray-painted to look like a metal hull.

He said: 'I made it to join the procession of the 30th merit-making festival in the subdistrict. However, I couldn't drive it for a long time because the battery ran out quickly during the parade. I had to constantly return home around a kilometre away, but I was glad to be part of the event. All of us had fun, and there were many tourists taking pictures of the UFO.'

Erawan Mayor Surasit Kansu said: 'The Bun Bang Fai Festival is different every year. This year, there was a UFO and an alien that joined the procession. We asked Mr. Wichan to create the flying saucer to add a touch of whimsy to the religious event.'

Thailand's Rocket Festival is held annually to honour Phaya Thaen, the Buddhist deity of rainmaking, as farmers and villagers pray for rain for a bountiful harvest. They believe the rockets will reach the clouds and help to stimulate impending monsoon downpours, which last until October or November.
