Clever crab carries jellyfish overhead to camouflage from predators
A crafty crab carried a jellyfish over its head to protect itself from aerial attacks from predators.
Award winning diver Yury Ivanov was on a night dive off the Indonesia island of Bali when he came across the incredibly rare sight of two animals working together.
Fascinating footage - viewed more than 1.5million times - shows a sea urchin crab carrying an upside-down jellyfish on its back using the predators as a hiding place from attackers.
The jellyfish – so named because its mouth is facing upwards – have a second symbiotic relationship which means they must lie in areas with lots of light to be able to fuel their energy source.
Yury said: “This was an incredibly rare sighting. I have done more than 12,000 hours diving underwater and have only seen this behaviour a couple of times.
“The crab has a special pair of legs on its back so they can carry the jellyfish in this way.
“Ordinarily they will carry sea urchins on their back for protection, but in a few cases they will use jellyfish as camouflage instead.
“I spend 300 days of the year diving, mainly off Bali.”
