China on Sunday donated more than 3,500 tonnes of grain to Syria to aid the war-torn country's recovery from the aftermath of the deadly earthquakes in February.

President of Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) Khaled Hboubati and Chinese Ambassador to Syria Shi Hongwei attended the handover ceremony of five shipments of 2,336 tonnes of wheat and 1,180 tonnes of rice, at the SARC's headquarters in Damascus.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): KHALED HBOUBATI, President of Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC)
"The amount of aid provided by the Chinese government to the Syrian Arab Red Crescent constitutes five shipments of wheat and rice. In the name of all of the Syrian people and the name of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, we extend our gratitude to the Chinese government for helping the Syrian people during this humanitarian crisis that we are going through."

For his part, the Chinese ambassador said his country would continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Syria and will be part of the reconstruction process in the country.

He hoped the Syrian people would overcome the impacts of the earthquake quickly.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): SHI HONGWEI, Chinese Ambassador to Syria
"After the earthquakes hit, the Chinese government was very concerned and we followed every day what was happening in Syria. That's why we offered urgent humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people. This time, we are offering grain estimated at around 3,500 tonnes of wheat and rice, and we will provide more humanitarian aid to the Syrian people."

Since the massive earthquakes struck Türkiye and Syria on February 6, China has been actively involved in assisting both countries.

China donated two shipments of aid to Syria in February, along with 80 tonnes of medical supplies and other goods for earthquake relief. In May, China donated 225 prefabricated houses to Syria.
