Ship appears to travel along sea wall in optical illusion in Kent, UK

A ship appeared to travel along a sea wall in an optical illusion seen in Kent this afternoon (June 14).

Dredging ship Hanson Thames appeared to travel across the top of the Sheerness sea wall, but was actually several miles out to sea.

The optical effect was due to the height difference between the filmer and ship being just right for the vessel to appear to 'sit on top of the wall' when seen with a telephoto lens.

The unusual spectacle is reminiscent of the 'floating ship pens' that were popular gifts in the 1970s & 1980s - whereby a model ship in a clear display on the side of writing pen - would slide from one end to the other when tilted.
