Boats sailed past the masts of the UK's most dangerous wreck on the 78th anniversary of its sinking, on Saturday 20 August.

The explosive-laden American Liberty ship SS Richard Montgomery ran aground on a sand bank and sank in the Thames estuary, about 1.5 miles (2.4km) north of Sheerness in Kent, on 20 August 1944.

The World War Two ship sank with an estimated 1,400 tonnes of explosives still onboard, making it the UK's most dangerous shipwreck.

An operation to remove the wreck's masts was due to be undertaken in the summer of 2022 but this has now been postponed until spring 2023, with only preparatory work to be undertaken later this year.
