This is the dramatic moment a landslide crashed onto a road as terrified motorists watched in the Philippines.

The motorcycle riders were coasting along Manipis Road in Talisay, Cebu province, when they noticed soil and rocks tumbling down the adjacent hill on June 26.

They stopped and watched from a distance as more stones slid down the slope, before a huge chunk of land crumbled and covered the path.

Authorities said the landslide may have been triggered by recent heavy rain in the area.

Joy Tumulak, Talisay City Traffic Operations Development Authority head, said: 'It's been raining a lot recently, which may have loosened the soil. This is the portion of the road that was not included in the benching. We estimate that around 500 to 600 dump trucks of soil crashed down.'

Local officials asked drivers to take alternative routes, as the clearing operations will last for around a week.

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are approaching their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
