The death toll from a landslide that took place in Maharashtra, central India on July 20th, has risen to 26 as rescue efforts are still ongoing.

The incident took place in Irshalwadi village in Raigad, home to over 200 people, many of whom are still missing and presumed trapped by debris.

The local National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) has said that 15-20 houses were buried under the debris after the landslide.

S. B. Singh, Commandant of the fifth battalion of the NDRF, commented: “Of the total 40 houses in the village, 17 have been affected. We have deployed four teams to conduct the rescue operations. The debris at some of the places is 10 to 29 feet deep.

"It is difficult to bring in heavy machinery to this place. It is a 2.8 km trek to reach the spot and we have to remove the debris manually which is likely to take a lot of time. While we are facing difficulties, we will continue our operations till we retrieve the last person,”
