80th anniversary of WW2 Red Sands Forts off Kent, UK

Today (July 23) marks the 80th anniversary of iconic Thames Estuary WW2 defensive structures - the Red Sands Forts - being sunk into position off Kent, UK.

The first fort within the group of seven was sunk into place on this day by steam tug Challenge back in 1943.

Red Sands Forts were designed by Guy Maunsell as anti-aircraft defences to protect the City of London from aerial attack, as enemy planes would often use the Thames Estuary as their approach route to easily locate London.

Footage filmed from Warden, Isle of Sheppey shows the forts at sunset this evening as ship Wisby Argan sailed past.
