Cape Town, 23 August 2023: Hundreds of land activists belonging to several organisations such as Reclaim The City, Ndifuna Ukwazi, The Housing Assembly, Gauteng Hosuing Committee and others marched to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s official residence Genadendal in Rondebosch. The organisations are calling on Ramaphosa and the City of Cape Town to release parcels of land for affordable and social housing.

At the same time as the march was taking place in Cape Town, sister organisations of these groups were marching on the BRICS heads of state summit in Johannesburg where Ramaphosa is hosting heads of state.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside Ramaphosa’s Cape Town residence listening to speakers reading out their demands to the City and National government. A representative of Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis read out a short statement after receiving the memorandum. A representative from the President’s office received the memorandum on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa.
