Shocking footage shows a petrol station worker narrowly dodging a fire that suddenly erupted in a vehicle's engine while refuelling.

Surveillance cameras captured the moment a white sedan was parked with an open bonnet by a gas pump in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, south-west China at around 6:00am on August 22.

An employee could be seen connecting the car to the pump and then standing by waiting for the tank to fill up.

Suddenly, the worker jumped up apparently noticing the pipe disconnect and rushed to correct it.

But as the worker moved closer to the open engine, a fire suddenly erupted and engulfed the front part of the vehicle.

The attendant managed to run away just in time and escape the sudden blaze. Two nearby vehicles quickly drive away to avoid the flames as the footage cuts.

According to local media, the burning vehicle was unoccupied at the time and no one was injured in the incident. The fire was extinguished within a few minutes, Chinese media reported.
