This is the dramatic moment a brave housewife chased away a ravenous wild monitor lizard that was trying to eat her pet bird.

The hungry reptile scoped out the white cockatiel before scampering over to scale the metal cage outside the mansion in Samut Prakan, Thailand, on July 11.

But before the beast could break through the bars and devour its lunch, the woman inside heard the commotion.

'Ay, ay, hey,' she was heard on CCTV yelling at the lizard from the front door. The lizard made a hasty retreat into nearby undergrowth as soon its daring heist was foiled.

Several relatives then emerged from the property as the Thai lady recounted the family bird's brush with death at the jaws of a dinosaur-like predator.

She said they are now taking care to prevent any more wild animals from sniffing around.

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers, and ponds across Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans. However, they can also target pets such as birds and rabbits.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
