A DIY fanatic converted a scrap car into an electric vehicle with a 48-volt battery pack.

Enthusiast Albert Nario, 30, bought the broken-down automobile from the local junk shop before tearing out the engine to be replaced with parts he bought online.

Footage shows Albert stripping the 1991 Nissan Sentra sedan, leaving it with a massive hole in the front.

The self-taught mechanic then built a new electricity-powered engine for the vintage car that he learned by watching online videos and reading how-to articles in Google.

Footage shows him driving the car around his hometown in Bataan province, the Philippines.

Albert said the vehicle has a 60v and 2200w motor, a 48v battery and a 50A controller with 48-96v and 2000w.

His homemade EV can reach a top speed of 46kmph (28.5mph) and has a range of 50km (31 miles).

The vehicle is a long way off the kind of distance that a Tesla Model X is capable of, but the price is a fraction of the 68,590 USD that the Elon Musk car will cost.

Albert said he paid 10,000php (142.02 GBP) for the scrap car and a similar amount for parts. Once the DIY engine was done, he placed it into the Nissan Sentra and took it for a test drive.

He added: 'This vehicle was a true bargain. I could never afford a Tesla, but my EV can do exactly the same. I can drive to the shops and do the school run.

‘It took me a few days to build. Electric cars are low maintenance because you only charge the batteries and that's it.

‘They are more expensive than diesel engine cars at first, but you actually save a lot in maintenance fees through the years.

‘I learned everything from internet tutorials. I was never a mechanic. This is just a hobby.'

Aside from the sedan, Albert has also successfully converted a 72-volt go-kart, ATV, and motorcycles.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining popularity across the world amid rising fuel prices, government incentives, rising supply and a political push for lower carbon emissions.
