A wild elephant stole plastic cutlery from the back of a passing pickup truck in Thailand.

The jumbo strolled on one lane of the forest road and approached vehicles he met on the way in Nakhon Ratchasima province on February 3.

Footage shows the animal poking its truck on the cargo bed and taking disposable cups, spoon, and fork.

It littered along the path and eventually let go of the cutlery when he seemed to have realised they weren't edible while the driver quickly climbed down to pick them up.

Onlooker Thongpan Khamphan said: 'The elephant set up a pickup truck checkpoint along the road.'

As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
