The performance of the assassination of Shinzo Abe, former Prime Minister of Japan, during a school sports event in eastern China has ignited a firestorm of debate.

Video filmed in Zaozhuang City in Shandong Province on October 10 shows a student acting as Abe standing on a chair to deliver a speech. Moments later, another student acting as a killer approached him, aiming a mock handgun at the speaker, following which the speaker theatrically fell to the ground.

Onlookers then pursued the shooter. In another striking moment, a student holds aloft a banner that reads "With two gunshots the body turns cold, polluting the waters brings troubles untold," eliciting applause and cheers from the audience.

A representative from Zaozhuang's Education Bureau commented on the incident, stating, "Their (the students') actions may not be entirely appropriate, but we allow students to make mistakes. After all, he is still a student." While many believe that the students' actions were ill-advised, it's noted that they are still in the learning phase and should be granted a degree of leniency.

One netizen commented on Chinese social media: "Idiot, you're embarrassing China", but another person said: "It's just a skit by the students, there's no need to blow it out of proportion."

The Education Bureau of Zaozhuang has since urged the school to initiate a thorough investigation into the incident and demanded a detailed report explaining the circumstances surrounding the event.

The video was provided by local media with permission.
