A construction worker miraculously survived after he accidentally fell while working and was impaled on five steel bars.

The accident, which left the man looking like a human pincushion with bars protruding from his body, reportedly happened at a construction site in Changzhi, in China's northern Shanxi Province, on October 16.

Firefighters and coworkers immediately teamed up to rescue the victim, whose identity was not revealed. They first attempted to cut the steel bars that had pierced the worker's body using cutting tools.

However, due to the position and shape of the bars, the cutting work proved extremely difficult, local media reported.

To alleviate the worker's pain as quickly as possible, firefighters decided to use a safer and faster method by employing special hydraulic expanders to bend the steel bars, and then carefully remove them from his body.

Simultaneously, coworkers extended their help and assisted the firefighters in clearing the scene, providing extra tools and equipment.

After nearly two hours of effort, the firefighters removed all the steel bars from his body. Medical personnel at the scene quickly administered first aid, and the worker was urgently transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

He currently remains hospitalised and is in a stable condition. Eyewitnesses said the worker had amazed them by simply gritting his teeth throughout the painful rescue.

Authorities said that they would conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident and take strict actions if there had been breaches of the health and safety rules.

They also vowed to conduct comprehensive safety inspections to prevent similar incidents from occurring again.
