STANDUP (English): YANGCHUK DHADRUN, Xinhua correspondent
"Here I'm standing beside the remains of a section of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) Great Wall in northwest China's Qinghai Province. The construction can date back to about 450 years ago and they played an important defense role then. Standing about 3,000 meters above the sea level, they are also recognized as the world's highest remains of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall."

The Great Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, consisting of many interconnected walls. It traverses through 15 provinces and cities in China.

Regarded as the largest and greatest fortification system in China's history, the Great Wall was built across the country during different dynasties to protect its territory and resist invasion from various nomadic groups.

Over the past 10 years, Datong Hui and Tu Autonomous County has invested more than 20 million yuan (about 2.74 million U.S. dollars) to implement the protection and reinforcement project of the Great Wall.

SOUNDBITE (Chinese): YAN YANAN, Former director of Datong County museum
"The Great Wall constructed during the Ming Dynasty in Datong County is well-preserved. Datong County has hired 17 volunteer protectors to strengthen the protection and management of the Great Wall. For those walls in need of repair, we have applied for funds for maintenance."
