A strong earthquake hit the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture on January 1. According to USGS, the magnitude was 7.5.

Shaking was felt in widespread areas, and tsunami warnings were issued for Niigata, Toyama, Yamagata, Fukui, and Hyogo prefectures, also along the Japan Sea Coast.

At least 24 dead were confirmed as of writing.
