Commuters rushed from a train station as a 7.1 magnitude earthquake rattled western China today.

Video shows passengers fleeing the Aksu City train station as the tremor jolted Xinjiang province, disrupting train services and knocking out power early morning on January 23.

The China Earthquake Networks Center reported that the quake struck at a depth of 22 kilometres near Wushi County in the mountainous Xinjiang region near China's border with Kyrgyzstan at 2:09 am local time.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Hundreds of disaster responders were dispatched as dozens of trains were suspended and at least two houses collapsed in the epicentre. Electricity was disrupted but restored shortly after the quake, local media reported.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that several aftershocks were also felt in the region, where earthquakes are common.
