Red-tailed Hawk (Harlan's Hawk) soars over Minnesota River in winter
This Red-tailed Hawk subspecies Harlan's Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis ssp. harlani) spends the summer breeding in the Alaska to Northwest Territory region. They primarily winter in the USA Great Plains. This one winters near Minneapolis, where it is considered rare, returning multiple winters in a row. Look at the coloration and compare it to a standard Red-tailed Hawk (white chest with a speckled dark belly). Harlan's Hawk is dark with a mottled white belly. Notice the white underwing with black tips. Enjoy watching it soar. through the forest along the Minnesota River just a few miles from Mall of America in the Twin Cities.
