Cambodia on Wednesday broke ground for the construction of four dormitory buildings for teachers and students at the University of Kratie under China's grant aid.

Touch Visalsok, secretary of state at Cambodia's Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, said the construction of the buildings with 80 rooms was made under the Phase 2 project of the China-aided University of Kratie.

He said the project would also include the construction of a basketball court, a food processing laboratory and an agricultural technology and science laboratory as well as a campus drainage system.

Ky Visal, vice rector of the University of Kratie, said the project will bring lots of benefits.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Khmer): KY VISAL, Vice rector of the University of Kratie
"When the construction of these dorm buildings is completed, I strongly believe that they will provide benefits to teachers, school management, and students from remote areas in Kratie province and its surrounding provinces."

The construction will be completed in the middle of 2025.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Khmer): LOEM SOMARIMA, First-year student at the University of Kratie
"These dorms will be very useful for students and teachers from remote areas, providing convenience to them in studying and teaching.
I feel excited to see the construction of the dorms because I live in a remote area, so the dorms will provide me convenience, making it easier for me to focus on study.
My home is a bit far, taking me about an hour and a half to travel by motorcycle to school."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Khmer): SEM PHEAREAK, First-year student at the University of Kratie
"The construction of these dorms is very important because students from rural areas, including me, will be able to stay here.
I feel very happy to see the construction of the dorms, which will reduce our expenses on the rent."

Situated in Kratie provincial town, the China-aided University of Kratie was officially launched in 2018.
