A zoo held a dragon and mascot parade to celebrate the Chinese New Year in Thailand.

Footage shows Chinese dragons being marched around the Chiang Mai Zoo by staff wearing traditional Cheongsam costumes on February 9.

Joining them was a procession of zookeepers dressed in adorable animal costumes.

Zoo director Wuttichai Muangman said more Lunar New Year-themed activities were prepared for the weekend to celebrate the occassion.

He said tourists will be allowed to interact with a Burmese python to mark the Year of the Dragon.

Staff of Chiang Mai University's Confucius Institute were also invited to show how to make dragon pattern hats, red envelopes, dragon puppets, and dragon lanterns.

Visitors were encouraged to wear auspicious red and gold clothes for the zoo's Chinese New Year festivities.

Chinese New Year in 2024 falls on Saturday, February 10. The celebrations culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 24.

The event is celebrated widely across Thailand, where immigrants from China developed the country when the mighty Khmer Empire moved further south in the 15th century.
