A wild elephant ran through a campsite and sent onlookers fleeing in Thailand.

The jumbo, while looking for food, wandered into the area at the Kaeng Krachan National Park, where tourists were allowed to pitch tents and stay the night in Phetchaburi province on February 10.

Footage shows the animal passing through a canopy tied to trees. It walked across the site, ignoring the men who were recording and watching nearby before they fled away.

It strolled around the area for a short moment before forest rangers arrived to help guide it back to the jungle.

Camper Wanthana Khumtum said: 'I think it was looking for food and found the tents. The officers were able to control the incident and no one was harmed.'

As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
