One worker was killed and at least 10 others were injured when a bridge being constructed collapsed in Bihar, India, on Friday morning.

The men were crushed beneath chunks of concrete when the infrastructure project gave way in the Supaul district.

District magistrate Kaushal Kumar said at least one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Ten others were rushed to hospital and three of them are in a critical condition.

He said: 'A massive rescue operation is underway.'

More than 40 labourers were reportedly working on the bridge - one of the longest in the country - when three pillars collapsed at around 7:30 am

The 10.2 km long bridge, which is being built over the Kosi River and connects Supaul and Madhubani districts, is being developed for the National Highways Authority of India (NHA) by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MoRTH).

Two companies – Gammon India and Trans Rail Lighting Limited – are jointly working on the project which costs 984 Crore (93 million GBP).
