A sailing fur seal, engaged in a behavior called thermoregulating, was captured on camera. In the footage, a New Zealand Fur Seal can be seen holding its flipper out of the water to cool down.

It holds its flipper out of the water because the water temperature was a bit warm for it. To cool down, it sticks its flipper out of the water.

This is similar to when we are under layers of blankets, and when we get too hot, we stick our foot out to the side in the fresh air to cool our body down just a bit.
