Hundreds of Hindu devotees on the day of Panguni Uthiram Festival displayed their extreme devotion by piercing their skin with metal hooks and hanging from cranes in a religious procession in southern Indian state of Kalapet in Pondicherry.

During the festival, hundreds of Hindu devotees pierce their bodies with numerous needles and spikes as marks of penance for their wishes to be fulfilled. Many devotees swing from heavy vehicles, hang from cranes and pull buses and containers from their hooked bodies.

The Panguni Uthiram festival, which means “Full Moon of Divine Marriages", is celebrated annually during the full moon of the Tamil month of Panguni, during the month of March.
