Rescue continues after highway collapse tragedy in southern China claims 48 lives

In the early hours of May 1st, at around 2:10 am, a highway collapse occurred on the section of the Meidagao Highway heading towards Fujian in Chaoyang County, Meizhou, southern China. As of 2:00 pm on May 2nd, the collapse on the Chaoyang section of the Meidagao Highway in Guangdong has resulted in the deaths of 48 people, with the DNA of 3 others awaiting further confirmation. Additionally, 30 people have been injured, but their injuries are not life-threatening.

Following the disaster, some vehicles involved caught fire, while most were buried under mud. The surrounding geological conditions at the rescue site are complex and prone to secondary disasters. The latest aerial footage shows ongoing search and rescue efforts employing continuous mechanical excavation and rotating shifts of personnel across multiple work fronts.

Wen Yongdeng, the Party Secretary of the Emergency Management Bureau of Meizhou City, stated that following the highway collapse disaster on the Chaoyang section of the Meidagao Highway, comprehensive searches are being conducted using life detection devices to ensure no vehicles or individuals are overlooked at the scene.
