Pat Lacey, 73, hadn't been to the doctors for a year when she fell over nine-year-old Ice, who she'd had for just eight days at the time, in her kitchen. The former civil servant, of Market Drayton, Shropshire, rushed to her local doctors after feeling her hand start to swell up the morning after the fall on January 17 last year. Doctors at Drayton Medical Practice found that she had unusually high blood pressure and an unexplained mark on her arm – which she had previously believed to be a mole. Pat was then referred to St Michael’s Skin Clinic in Shrewsbury, where she and husband Les, also 73, got the shock cancer diagnosis on March 24 last year.
