Thousand foot Laker ship heads into Lake Superior winter storm with wild waves

Buy video

Duluth, Minnesota's first wild winter storm of the season unleashed powerful winds and dumped up to 10.6" of snow Thursday night and Friday (10/26-27/2017). The strong winds, combined with near-record water levels on Lake Superior and a 4-5 foot storm surge, created waves that were stronger and more destructive than usual. Lakewalk was badly damaged, as were sections of the shoreline. As the weakening waves crashed on shore Friday afternoon, the "thousand footer", American Integrity, departed through Duluth's shipping canal. This 1,000 foot vessel frequently transports western coal, and occasionally iron ore pellets, on the Great Lakes. She has a capacity of 78,850 tons. At the time of departure, the American Integrity faced wave heights of 9-14 feet which were fueled by sustained winds of 25 mph, gusting to 30 mph.

Note: This is NOT an ocean; Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world.
