Stunning Lake Superior Sea Smoke in Subzero Temps

Buy video

Once again, the Polar Vortex has returned to Duluth, Minnesota and Lake Superior is quickly making ice. This morning was a breathtaking -17°F ambient temperature (-40°F windchill) by the big lake. When the sun rose, it backlit the sea smoke and painted it in fiery hues. It created a warm scene on such a frigid morning!

Sea smoke is a winter fog that forms from evaporative cooling of the lake. When the frigid air moves over the comparatively warmer water, steam-like plumes rise from the surface and gracefully glide across the lake, eventually forming clouds that deliver lake effect snow to the opposite shore.
