Humpback Whale spy hopping at Silver Bank, Dominican Republic
One of the most impressive activities of the humpbacks is called spy hopping. They stick just their faces out of the water to collect data about their surrounding environment. Each eye can see 180 degrees, which means they can essentially see 360 degrees around their entire bodies. They have little bumps on the faces called ventricles, each one containing a whisker type of hair fiber that collects data. It was extremely impressive to see how such a large beast can gracefully stick just its head out and sit there for a couple of seconds with full control.
