Red kites have been congregating at Bellymack Hill Farm since 2001 when they were reintroduced to Galloway. This is partly due to the prevailing SW winds which create up-drafts from the hillside, enabling kites to ride the air effortlessly over the farm. Since 2003 the feeding has allowed visitors to get close firsthand experiences of these gregarious birds when they come in to spectacularly snatch food provided for them.

Anne Johnstone the owner of Bellymack Hill Farm told me that about 150 Red Kites are coming to feed at the moment. she added as the springtime progresses the kites like to follow the farmers tractors when they plough the fields and eat earth worms unearthed by the ploughing, so less kites come to the feeding station.
