Cars move slowly on highway shrouded in smoke as brush fire burns scarily close
Drivers drove in low visibility conditions on the Interstate 580 in Altamont, east of San Francisco, on July 8 due to a brush fire that broke out nearby.
The east and westbound lanes of the freeway were closed as flames spread to both sides.
This video, shot by Ron Richards and shared to Facebook, shows cars driving towards the wall of smoke ahead.
Local media reported that passengers in their cars could feel the heat and hear the crackling of the fire from inside their vehicles. Much of the hillside had also turned black.
The westbound lanes were reopened at around 7 pm, about an hour after the fire was reported.
