Razorbills Alca torda filmed on the Isle of Lunga in Scotland

Atlantic Puffins Fratercula arctica may be the main attraction for visitors to Lunga but I was equally keen to photograph some of the other residents and in particular the Razorbills Alca torda. These handsomely marked auks may not share the colourful bills of the former during the breeding season but they have a charm all of their own and I was therefore delighted when one landed on the cliff's edge not too far away from me. I had already filmed one preening although on this occasion my attention was divided as there was a pair of Puffins in a better position on a rock right beside me and my standing position wasn't particularly stable either. The colourful gape of the Razorbills cannot be seen in the video so a still photograph has been included to illustrate the striking orange-yellow colour that is exposed when the bill is opened. Most of the noise accompanying the final sequence was being generated by the numerous members of an adjacent Guillemot or Common Murre Uria aalge colony.
