Hundreds of pilgrims accompanied from Cuisnahuat, Sonsonate, the images of San Cristóbal and San Lucas to develop one of the greatest rituals that has been preserved for more than 200 years, the meeting of the Cumpas. This tradition is a sample of the Christian-indigenous religious fusion, gathered in a single day. The traditional holiday party consists of the inhabitants of Cuisnahuat and Jayaque, making a pilgrimage from their municipalities, to Tepecoyo to visit their compadres and exchange gifts. By pre-Columbian tradition, every July 23 the popular "Topa de los Cumpas" is celebrated, a festival of indigenous origin deeply rooted in the western part of the country.

The genesis of this tradition has different versions. For many people, they attribute it to the pre-Hispanic era where the indigenous communities of Cuisnahuat moved to the mountain of Jayaque to exchange edible gifts such as shellfish for medicinal plants such as rue and chichipince from the mountain, among other offerings in the month of July specifically. The meeting was celebrated with "chicha", a fermented beverage based on corn.

The second explanation is based on the belief that the arrival of the Spaniards, the priests in charge of each population were aware of a supposed rivalry between both communities and sought to take advantage of this circumstance so that the images of San Cristóbal and San Lucas were a symbol of conciliation and fraternal friendship. This syncretism has been maintained over the years and many residents are faithful to the activities that have been inherited over the years.
