Indian police have arrested four men for vandalising a world heritage site in Hampi, Karnataka.

Police sources said the four men are being interrogated and details of the crime would be made public after that.

In a horrifying case of vandalism, the four miscreants had damaged several pillars in the temple ruins of Hampi in South India.

A video shot by one of them had filmed the other three pushing down stone pillars from the ruins of a Vishnu temple.

Hampi, the site of the ruins of the well-known medieval Vijayanagara empire, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Local residents staged a protest on February 2 demanding better protection for the ancient monuments.

In January, The New York Times listed the Hampi World Heritage site as the second must-see place in 2019.
