Tanker 118 performing a retardant cleanout before the USFS shuts the program down

In 2018, the USFS had two air tankers to drop retardant. They shut the program down and sent the crew packing, mothballing the airplanes on Sept 20, 2018.

This is the crew performing the last cleanout of the MAFFS II system before disassembling the system and returning it to Reno NV, where it stays in the off season.

The aircraft are mothballed at McClellan, CA and have been transferred to Cal Fire. Cal Fire has yet to put them to use. Their plans are to put a RADS gravity tank in the airplanes. This was all part of NDAA 2019.
