The reduction of traffic especially the most polluting vehicles that Central Madrid has entailed has led to a significant drop in pollution in the capital in April. According to the analysis of Ecologists in Action based on official data, the measurement station of Plaza del Carmen, the only one located inside the restricted traffic perimeter, has registered a 48% decrease in NO2 (Nitrogen Dioxide) with Respect to the same month of previously year. In the stations near Madrid Central not only there is no increase in pollution, but in general also low, so that the ecologists discard the so-called border effect, that is, rising pollution in the surrounding areas.

The favorable weather conditions of this past month - unlike March, when it almost did not rain -, make it possible to draw a difference between the capital and the Community, where traffic restriction measures have not been taken. Thus, while in 21 of the 24 stations in the city there is a reduction in NO2 levels that reach 16% in the whole network, in the 23 regional measurement points the drop is much lower and only reaches 6 %
