Avalanche in Black Iron Bowl

Buy video

This is in an area called "Review" in the Black Iron Bowl in the Telluride Ski Resort. To get to the Black Iron bowl its about a 20 to 25 min hike up a ridge to get to 12,250 ft. The recent warm weather has made the snowpack very weak and we had just gotten about 5 inches back there on top of a weak layer in the snowpack. I was skiing inbounds even though its more like side country skiing, so I didn't think anything would slide. I made a hard stop after some nice powder skiing and I triggered the whole snowpack. As you can see in the video, the area in which I came from was down to the bedrock and there was no snow left. I would call it a D1 Avalanche. I got lucky it carried me where it did and not over the cliffs.
