Lotus farmers collect this season's bounty crop from a pond in Phayao, northern Thailand, on Otcober 27.

Delighted owner Rungnapa Chumlue said the day's crop would net her her around 10,000 baht (126 GBP).

She said: ''I grow various type of lotus, including those that people buy to donate to Buddhist monks and others that are eaten. Cultivating lotus plants is a useful extra source of money for me.''

Lotus plants thrive in shallow water and a tropical climate. They are considered a sacred plant in Buddhism and used widely in temples. The seeds are also edible and are often sold as a snack or mixed in food.
