The Royal Navy veteran Ernie Davis of the Russian Convoy Club is talking to visitors and participants of the Act of Remembrance wreath-laying ceremony at the Soviet War Memorial in Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park on Remembrance Sunday, 10 November 2019. Participants are gathering in the park, adjacent to the Imperial War Museum, ahead of the ceremony.
The Arctic Convoys helped the Red Army to push back against the Nazis during the WWII, but at a very high price. More than 3,000 seamen were killed during 78 convoys that delivered 4 million tonnes of cargo. Eighty-five merchant ships and 16 Royal Navy vessels were destroyed. It is thought 66,500 men sailed on the convoys, but only a few hundred are alive today.
