A lucky OAP whose home was almost destroyed by a suspected drink-drivers' car escaped death by just seconds - because he popped to the loo.

Stan Miller, 75, had been writing Christmas cards to his family in his sitting room when he got out of his armchair to answer a call of nature.

Seconds later a Vauxhall Corsa car smashed through his bungalow's wall and window and ended up embedded half-way into the room.

Today engineers were trying establish whether his home was structurally sound while police detained a 32-year-old man on suspicion of drink-driving.
