An Indonesian detention centre in Makassar has allowed the release of 175 detainees due to the risk of them becoming infected with COVID-19.

On Monday morning (April 6) as many as seven ex-detainees were released under house arrest.

The head of Makassar Penitentiary Robianto said: "According to the Decree of the Minister of Law and Human Rights, it was said that in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in prisons and detention centres, inmates who had already served half of the criminal sentence and two-thirds as of 31 December 2020 can be released under house arrest."

A total of 175 ex-convicts who are in the Makassar Class I Penitentiary, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, have been assimilated at home or released. This assimilation since last week and last carried out on Monday April 6, 2020 morning.
